New LG monitor review! This is one of LG’s affordable 3D monitor for consumers.

I don’t own any 3D monitors and this is my first experience with 3D monitors. I might get some facts wrong, please bear with me :)

Experience

Physical setting up is as easy as any monitors. However, software setups for 3D monitors isn’t like normal monitors where drivers and software aren’t really required Most normal monitors are just plug and play. LG provides a  software called “Tridef 3D”. In order to experience the 3D functionality on PC, this software must be installed.

To play games in 3D, it must be run via Tridef 3D. It might sound like a hassle but shortcuts can be created after the first run through.

For movies, Tridef 3D’s media player must be used. I didn’t have particular preference for media players so it didn’t affect me. It might bother some of those who love their current media players.

For more info on Tridef 3d go to http://www.tridef.com/

The 3D settings might overwhelm some of the non-techies but default settings works good enough for me.

Complete Installation shouldn’t take more than 15mins.

It is nice of LG to provide a pair of 3D spectacles. Not sure if every other 3D monitor provides this. But I kinda hope they provided a clip on 3D glasses for people like me. Clip on are good for people who are already wearing a pair of spectacles. For long hours usage, I highly recommend a purchase of a clip on 3D glasses.

Visuals

This time round, I didn’t get to test the monitor with consoles. I mainly tried this on PC with movies, Street Fighter 4 and Starcraft.

2D Movies didn’t work really well although the monitor supports 2D to 3D function. 2D CG movies such as “How to Train a Dragon” looks ok but it doesn’t make me go wow.
Plain real life movies didn’t really make a difference. I guess actual 3D movies will be better for use with 3D monitors.

However games such as Street Fighter 4 and Starcraft, the 3D effects are pretty good. Mind you, I haven’t tried alot of 3D monitors/Tvs. My brother went WOW though lol.

There is a limited number of games that are supported by tridef’s 3D software. The games I tried so far are all the popular ones which works really well with the software.

The colors and contrast levels doesn’t outperform my current monitors though.

Conclusion

This monitor is affordable for people who are looking for cheaper 3D solutions who don’t mind lower quality for colors and contrast should take a look at this monitor.
For those who are concerned about lag. With or without 3D, I can’t feel any apparent difference in lag. By the way, this is a 5ms monitor.
